Neckties

Did you know that we have Croats to thank or curse for our neckties? When Croats appeared in 17th century France as mercenaries, the distinctive neckbands that they wore became fashionable and gave rise to the French word cravate which is derived from the word for Croat in Croatian, Hr̀vāt. This was the forerunner of the modern necktie.
